Our History

1974

BURNSIDE ENGINEERING FOUNDED

In 1974 the company Burnside Engineering was founded by four brothers, Paddy, Jimmy, Tommy and Anthony Byrne in Balltymoon Carlow.

From a farming and industrial background they quickly established themselves as a key supplier of precision made quality hydraulic products to domestic and British equipment manufacturers.

1988

PB MACHINE TECH FOUNDED

Continually aware of the need to grow and diversify to best satisify their customers’ needs and that of a rapidly growing cylinder production line in Burnside Paddy, his two sons, Pat and Paschal, and daughter Lily founded PB Machine Tech in Bagenalstown. Initially founded to support the expanding Burnside factory and supply precision machined components we soon grew beyond this.

MAKING PRECISON MACHINED COMPONENTS

While Lily focused on growing the business and the financial control of the Burnside and Bagenalstown plants Pat and Paschal developed processes and designs in PB which allowed us to develop our products and services. As a result of this we quickly grew – needing larger premises in 1991.

1989

DEVELOPMENT OF THE P.B. LOG SPLITTER

An inventive and innovative family they soon added another product to our component manufacturing – the Log Splitter. This was designed, developed and produced all in house using patented processes and techniques. This log splitter was exported all over Europe, especially to Scandinavia.

THE PB FOOT PUMP

Not content with the success of the Log Splitter, another new product was added – the PB Hydraulic Footpump. This product allowed us to use our wealth of hydraulic knowledge to design and make the perfect foot pump. This is still one of our best selling products and we have developed a full range of pumps from our standard pump to a higher capacity one and a vertical pump. The PB Footpump is used on height adjustable work tables in the automotive and aerospace sectors.

BURNSIDE AUTOCYL (Tullow) FOUNDED

Rapid growth of the business needed a second production factory to allow us to keep up our history of excellent customer service and supply of a superior product to all of Ireland and the UK and begin expansion into Europe.

1990

ADDITION OF SPRING RETURN VALVE ACTUATOR

Seeing an opening in the design and production of the spring return valve actuator market PB jumped at the opportunity to add this product to their line. This was something that we could easily work with and improve upon for customers. Plus as we already supplied many of the companies in Ireland and the United Kingdom which required these actuators with cylinders from the Burnside facility this was a logical development of the business.

CYLINDER PRODUCTION AT PB FACTORY

As the Burnside hydraulic cylinder was now penetrating into the European market in addition to the Irish and Uk markets another cylinder production plant was needed to meet customer demand. From the shipping of our very first cylinder we have maintained a policy of custom designing and building every product to our customer’s exact requirements. The development of this market is today our core focus and we maintain our policy of custom designing every cylinder to our customer’s exact needs.

1997

BURNSIDE GROUP ESTABLISHED

In 1997 Burnside Engineering evolved into three separate companies to form the Burnside Group – three separate factories in Tullow, Ballymoon and Carlow. This allowed each of the Burnside companies to focus on and specialise in servicing separate industry sectors. PB are a sister company of Burnside Autocyl in Tullow and we design and make market leading cylinders in co-operation with them.

2001

LILY HOLMES APPOINTED MANAGING DIRECTOR

In 2001 Lily Holmes, daughter of founder Paddy Byrne, took over as our Managing Director of PB and Pat took on the role as MD in Burnside Autocyl in Tullow.

CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE AND RESEARCH AND DEVLEOPMENT FOUNDED

In stepping aside as MD of Burnside Autocyl Paddy Byrne, chairman, was able to found and run the Burnside Autocyl Centre of Excellence in the Tullow plant. Here he and his dedicated team focus on developing state of the art hydraulic cylinder solutions, have extensive testing capabilities, perfect production processes and purpose build patented equipment and process solutions which are unique to Burnside Autocyl and PB.

2002

ROBOTIC PRODUCTION DEVELOPMENT

In 2002 the first robot was delivered to PB which allowed us to automate some of the machining processes.

2007

EXPANSION AND MOVE TO PURPOSE BUILT CYLINDER PREMISES

In 2007 we moved our cylinder production to a new purpose built 25000 sq ft factory. New painting plant, washing facilities etc.

2009

REFITTING OF COMPONENT FACTORY

After the move of the cylinder production to the new premises we were able to re-fit our component producing premises and re-organise our production cells and added new state of the art machines which increased the production capacity and also added to the range of components which we can produce.
